I think I should first mention that I went through a lot of sims and many many hours playing this game when I really should of been sleeping. :P
(According to my family tree, there is a total of 61 dead sims with 6 living so far)
** The most important skill for all the members of this lot was definitely 'creativity' to paint them masterpieces. Toddlers would almost max them out before they would age into childs (Logic being the least important).
To give you an idea of my game play:
1 Money: Right from the beginning, most of the adults that was on the lot had to work to get promotions then changing jobs when they reach the top to get the bonuses. Then there was the maternity leaves from all them babies born on the lot, the mothers/fathers would mostly stay home and paint. Teens that had fortune aspirations would start working almost immediately (The job exception was for some of the popularities that would just be at home 24/7, permanently stuck to the phone or playing chess to build up friendships).
2 Maxing skills: My teen/adult Knowledge Sims would never sleep till they learn all their skills. They would be learning their skills and using the hat and energizers. I had so many Sims on the lot, it wasn't till the 5th generation that I got smart and started to use the SimVac, not sucking other knowledge Sims if they have the fear of losing a skill, but also sucking those Sims that would soon *coughsDiecoughs* that have many skills to pass onto a living sim. So yes, all my Sims mostly have their skills maxed out regardless of their aspirations. Reason is simply so that it is easier for those workers to get promotions and to change fields (Since I had installed NL, I had to avoid those LTW's that wanted to be top of certain fields).
The low point of playing this way was all them Sims was driving me insane during the '10kids want' - I felt like an absolute mass murderer lol , and it was sad most of the time having to kill off some of the Sims that I liked but didn't think they would contribute anymore to the lot but had to sacrifice them for new Sims (either adult baby makers or babies).
